Power BI is a free interactive data visualization application developed by Microsoft with a primary focus on business intelligence that gives a single view of your data, that allows you to monitor and report on organizational data in real time. No coding or algorithms are required!

Workshop Outcomes

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn to:

  • Connect to, import, and transform data from a variety of sources
  • Use data modeling to explore data with powerful visualizations
  • Build an interactive dashboard and utilize the Power BI Service

Please note that this course requires participants to use a PC with Microsoft Excel installed. Additionally, a working knowledge of Excel at an intermediate level is necessary to fully engage with the course content and exercises.

Who Should Attend

A variety of professionals will benefit from the Dashboard in a Day workshop: 

  • Individuals looking to make sense of large amounts of data  
  • Individuals with limited familiarity with Power BI   
  • All levels of professionals who use data to sell, market and make decisions and are looking to transform data into actionable organizational intelligence
  • No prior Power BI experience is necessary; a familiarity with Excel is recommended

Schedule and Format

This workshop will be offered online with live synchronous instruction.

The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and finishes at 4:00 p.m.

All students taking the Dashboard in a Day using Power BI workshop are required to complete a lab assignment on their own time (approximately 1 hour of work).

Additionally, students who plan to take this workshop either using a tuition waiver or as part of a degree program are required to complete the lab assignment as well as a graded assignment (approximately 2.5 hours of work) on their own time.

Non-Credit: $880

Eligible DU Staff can use their Tuition Waiver to participate in Executive Education workshops, gaining valuable knowledge and skills for a fraction of the workshop cost. Workshops must be taken for-credit, and to receive credit, you will need to complete a short assignment at the end of the workshop.

There is an $8 tech fee that is not covered by the tuition waiver.

Meet Your Instructor

Amy Phillips

Amy Phillips

Amy is a former Teaching Professor in the department of Business Information and Analytics, Daniels College of Business and an Adjunct Faculty in Executive Education. Her teaching and professional interests have spanned technical areas in business including web development and database management. She is the co-author of the award winning and best-selling textbook Business Driven Information Systems. Amy received her MEd in educational technology in 1995 from Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, where she was a lecturer. She joined the University of Denver faculty in 2000.

When working with the media, Phillips offers comprehensive knowledge of management information systems. She is the author of the leading MIS textbook in the world, Business-Driven Information Systems, now in its second edition.

More Details

Please note this is a technology heavy class. We will be on laptops utilizing Excel and Power BI for most of the workshop. There is a 2- to 3-hour assignment which needs to be completed outside of class time.
