Library Resources for Market Research

Industry Expert: Brooky Parks

  Presentation: Workshop:
Date:
Tuesday, January 28 Wednesday, February 5
Time: 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
Location: MRH 113 AAC Room 340
  > Register here > Register here

Description:

Startups often lack the resources—both time and money—to conduct extensive primary research. That’s where secondary research becomes invaluable. By leveraging existing data, startups can validate business ideas, assess market demand, gain insights into customer needs and preferences, and identify effective marketing, pricing, and distribution strategies.

Both the presentation and workshop cover similar content, focusing on the secondary research tools and resources available at DU and how they can support your business ideas. However, the presentation provides a broad overview, making it ideal for students exploring product development, market strategy, pitching, or courses like BUS1440: The Fourth Industrial Revolution and EVM 1100: Introduction to Entrepreneurship. The workshop, on the other hand, offers a more hands-on experience, guiding you through practical exercises to apply these tools directly to your business ideas. There’s no need to attend both, so choose the format that best suits your learning style and goals.

Designing a sustainable customer-centric business and product is a multi-step process. Once you have created a product that addresses an unmet need of your customers (the Discovery process), it’s time to make sure that it resonates as intended. The validation process is relatively “scientific” in nature, using a series of experiments and tests to ensure that your customers are satisfied with the business and product.

This workshop will cover some of the key elements of product validation, ranging from user testing to broader marketing tests. Our objective is to help you narrow down your hypotheses and design solid tests around them so that you can quickly and effectively learn from your customers and move closer to product-market fit.
