We welcome applicants from all professional backgrounds and academic disciplines. No prior work experience—or background in business—is required. To apply, you must submit:

GMAT or GRE scores are optional. If you determine that your application will be stronger with GMAT or GRE scores, please submit them when you apply.

All accepted students are automatically considered for scholarships. No additional application is needed.

Do you want to build your skills but aren’t ready to commit to a master’s degree? You can start by taking courses toward a 4- or 6-course certificate in Real Estate DevelopmentReal Estate Investment or Construction Project Management. FAQs for the MS in Real Estate and the Built Environment

What type of degree do you have to have to be considered for the program?

No specific degree is required, however you do need to show good quantitative skills. If you don’t have a business degree or degree that is quantitatively heavy, you might want to consider doing a GMAT to show you have the skills to handle the course work.

What type of experience do you like to see for the program?

A couple of years of general professional experience will help. We really like real estate, construction, finance, engineering, architecture, or banking experience for the program. We do consider students directly from undergrad into the program, but encourage them to find an internship or take a part-time job in the industry to help with job opportunities after graduation.

Where do your graduates go after graduation?

Because the program is very diverse and offers so many courses, there is no one set career path. Also our students are very diverse in their experience and education as well. So we have students working in construction companies, development companies, commercial real estate, real estate finance, asset management, property management, or private investing. The list goes on because there are so many avenues and different experiences that our students spread across the industry.

What is the age range of people in the program?

We have ages from directly out of undergrad and people who are in their 50’s making career changes. So the group creates a very interesting classroom experience for everyone.

How long does the program take to complete?

The program is very flexible. You can complete it in 18 months to 2 years – this is sweet spot for most full time students, because it allows them to have time to take part in the various competitions and extra resume building activities the Burns School offers. However, we do have part-time students who take advantage of the flexibility of the program and take 3-5 years to complete.

Are there additional scholarships available for this program?

Yes, the industry is full of different organizations offering scholarship opportunities for students pursuing a degree in either construction or real estate.
