In 2022, Entrepreneurship@DU introduced a transformative experiential learning opportunity for its students: a week-long international immersion trip aimed at fostering entrepreneurial insight and global learning. This past December, 10 students, both graduate and undergraduate, traveled to Istanbul, Turkey. This initiative, spearheaded by faculty and supported by University leadership, combined cultural exploration, entrepreneurial outlooks and interdisciplinary learning to provide students with a global perspective that extended far beyond the classroom.

The Vision Behind the Trip

This trip was born out of necessity and inspiration. Traditionally, E@DU had offered a winter interterm trip to Israel. However, geopolitical challenges required faculty to explore new destinations that offered a rich tapestry of culture, history and innovation. Turkey emerged as a unique candidate, connecting Europe and Asia through its historical significance and burgeoning startup ecosystem.

“With our annual Israel trip on hold, I searched for a destination rich in culture, history, food, and a developing startup scene,” said Joshua Ross, director of entrepreneurship at the Daniels College of Business. “Turkey stood out. During my visit, I met with organizations, accelerators, and startups and saw a thriving and inspiring entrepreneurial community. It seemed like the perfect place to take our students.”

A faculty member with strong local ties and an educational history in Turkey, Professor Murat Kucukvar, played a pivotal role in crafting the itinerary. His network facilitated access to organizations, startups and universities, creating an enriching experience that was both educational and culturally immersive.

The students on the trip included MBA candidates and undergraduates from several disciplines. The group’s diversity fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, enriching discussions and insights.

Cultural Immersion Meets Entrepreneurship

The week-long program seamlessly blended cultural immersion with entrepreneurial exploration. Students visited Istanbul and Izmir, delving into Turkey’s rich history, vibrant food culture and iconic landmarks, like the Bosphorus and Blue Mosque.

But this trip was about more than tourism—it was about experiencing and engaging. The itinerary included eight visits to startups, accelerators and universities, providing students with firsthand insights into Turkey’s evolving entrepreneurial landscape.

Through conversations with Koç University and KWorks, an entrepreneurial research center, students discovered the challenges and opportunities of starting a business in Turkey. They learned about navigating bureaucracy, leveraging government support, and innovative programs, such as startup accelerators and mentorship initiatives.

Sean Hsu, an undergraduate student who attended the trip shared: “We visited numerous Turkish colleges and engaged with CEOs of various startups across Turkey. The country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is rapidly expanding, earning a strong reputation among developed nations for its high-quality services and innovative products that are making a global impact.”

Students were exposed to diverse perspectives, learned about global business practices and developed a deeper appreciation for cultural nuances. By interacting with local entrepreneurs and students, they saw how food, culture and innovation intersected in Turkey’s unique context.

One of the most valuable outcomes of the trip was its impact on students’ personal and professional journeys. It provided them with a global perspective, fostering adaptability, creativity and cross-cultural communication—essential skills for entrepreneurial and career success.

“My favorite part of the trip was exploring Turkey’s rich history through iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, the Ancient City of Ephesus, Dolmabahçe Palace and the Galata Tower,” Hsu said. “It’s incredible to witness firsthand the enduring legacy of one of the world’s greatest empires, the Ottomans, and see how their impact still shapes the present day.”

The Turkey immersion trip exemplifies the University of Denver’s commitment to experiential education and global engagement. It highlights the importance of stepping out of the classroom to learn from the world, fostering a sense of curiosity and innovation that prepares students to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape.
