Fourteen awards given out for faculty and staff contributions
For the first time since May 2019, the Daniels Awards for Excellence were held in person to celebrate faculty and staff accomplishment from the 2021-22 academic year. Normally held over breakfast, the event was moved to an afternoon reception Thursday, May 19.
Dean Vivek Choudhury opened by noting several major contributions this year, including the launch of the new Master of Science in Digital Leadership, the creation of the Liniger Center on Franchising and improved rankings for the undergraduate and MBA programs.
Following the dean’s remarks, Lisa Victoravich, associate dean of faculty and research presented the faculty award winners. Leanne Bokinskie, associate dean of finance and business operations, presented the staff awards.
FACULTY AWARDS
Excellence in Teaching Award
This award is presented to an appointed Daniels faculty member with outstanding performance in teaching. This award will be given to an individual based on performance in 2021-present.
Honoree: Suzette Loving, associate professor of the practice in accountancy
Thomas Howard Innovative Teacher Award
This award recognizes an appointed Daniels faculty member who exemplifies the idea of teaching innovation and business relevance. The individual must have a long-time contribution to innovations in learning and teaching, and evidence of using learning and teaching technology in an innovative way.
Honoree: Eric Holt, assistant professor of real estate and construction management
Industry Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award
The award is presented to an adjunct faculty member for the most outstanding performance in teaching.
Honoree: James Skip Spensley, adjunct professor in management
Emerging Scholar
This award recognizes an untenured Daniels faculty member who has made significant intellectual contributions in the last three years.
Honorees: Ana Babic Rosario, assistant professor of marketing, and Nate Waddoups, assistant professor of accountancy
Distinguished Scholar
This award to recognize a tenured faculty member who has made a significant impact in an area of scholarship over the past three years.
Honoree: Karen Xie, associate professor of hospitality management
Excellence in Service
The award is presented to an appointed Daniels faculty member for significant contribution to service. As expressed in the Daniels Philosophical Statement of Scholarship, service contributions can be made within the University environment, within the academic discipline, and/or within the business/professional community.
Honoree: Kathleen Novak, teaching associate professor of management
STAFF AWARDS
Rising Star
This new award is presented to a staff member who exemplifies unity and positive morale, consistently provides assistance to colleagues, is supportive and dedicated to the team concept, and goes above and beyond expectations by using creative problem solving to enhance the internal and/or external customer service experience. They go above and beyond the call of duty by enhancing and promoting quality and by exhibiting an exceptional spirit of collaboration with others.
Honoree: Joy Melgarejo, assistant to the chair in management
Staff Leadership
This new award is presented to a staff member who enhances the quality of work life in ways that make a significant difference for colleagues, who demonstrates leadership and provides guidance in interacting with the staff, faculty and students—above and beyond the expectations of their role. They also contribute above and beyond the call of duty through the development, implementation and fostering of advances in departmental operations, creative services and/or successful programs. In addition, they consistently engage in collaboration through partnerships within Daniels and the University to promote success and excellence.
Honoree: Kristal Griffith, senior director of communications and operations
Alexander J. Lindsay Award
This award was established in 1961 in honor of Dr. Alexander Lindsay, who was a faculty member in the College for 22 years. The award is presented to the staff member who provides outstanding customer service to members of the Daniels community.
Honoree: Megan Reilly, director of MBA global and experiential learning
Hidden Hero
This award is in recognition of a behind-the-scenes hero, whose work is not often in the limelight, but who Daniels could not operate without. The award recognizes someone who consistently goes the extra mile and chooses excellence as their standard.
Honoree: Kate Johnson, web manager in the Office of Communications, Marketing, Graduate Admissions and Events
AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
Dean Choudhury announced the Daniels Awards for Excellence winners. These awards are presented to an undergraduate student, graduate student, staff member and faculty member who, in the opinion of faculty and staff, have made an outstanding contribution to the Daniels College of Business and demonstrate the Daniels values of leadership, ethical behavior, appreciation of diversity and service to the community.

In closing, Dean Choudhury congratulated the award winners and acknowledged the work of all employees at Daniels. “Thank you for your dedication, commitment and service,” he said.
Victoravich also recognized the faculty who are retiring, most after this quarter. They are:
- Don Bacon, professor of marketing and program director
- Jeff Brothers, teaching assistant professor of accountancy
- Barb Jackson, director of the Burns School
- John Holcomb, professor of business ethics and legal studies
- Scott McLagan, professor of the practice in management
- Kevin O’Brien, chair of the Department of Business Ethics and Legal Studies and director of the Institute for Enterprise Ethics
Undergraduate student awards will be presented at the spring breakfast and graduate student awards will be presented at the spring academic hood ceremony June 10.
