Undergraduate student reflects on following in his father’s footsteps

Ethan Kamber’s first visit to DU

In 1986, my dad, Seth Kamber (BA 1991), stepped onto DU’s campus to begin his college career. During his time spent at DU, he received a great education and enjoyed every moment he spent here. As his youngest son, I also began my college career at DU—33 years later.

First time at DU
I visited DU for the first time in 2010 when I was 9 years old. To my dad, campus looked the same yet different from what he remembered when he graduated nearly 30 years earlier.

There were some things that remained the same: Centennial Halls (his freshman-year dorm), J-Mac (his sophomore-year dorm), as well as many academic buildings. There were also things that were different: the renovated Anderson Academic Commons, the recently resurrected Nagel Hall and the Daniels College of Business.

Supporting DU

When the DU women’s soccer team was in the Sun Belt conference, my family would go support them near our home in south Florida. Over the years, we went to two women’s soccer games—one against Florida International University and one against Florida Atlantic University, always repping our DU gear. We were good luck because they won both games we attended.

We also closely followed the DU’s men’s hockey team when they won the 2017 National Championship in Tampa Bay, just a two-hour drive away. Also, since moving back to Colorado, my dad has attended some DU hockey games and says Magness Arena still has a great atmosphere for college hockey.

Choosing DU

Before choosing to attend DU, my family visited campus whenever we traveled to Colorado. Each time I saw DU, the more I liked it. It was not until I was a junior in high school that I recognized that DU was a viable option for my college career.

That same year, I had my first official tour of DU and it became my top choice for college. When on the official tour, I vividly remember my dad whispering to me each time we passed a building: “This building was here,” “This building must be new,” “This building wasn’t here.” But to him, DU still had the same feel it did three decades earlier.

DU, and by extension, the Daniels College of Business, has become a home away from home for me. Over nearly two crazy years at the University, I have had the opportunity to engage with wonderful professors, make great friends and experience DU in a way that makes my dad proud.
