On June 4, Entrepreneurship@DU hosted its quarterly 4impact Challenge at the University of Denver’s Community Commons, an exciting evening that brought together students, alumni and judges to celebrate student-powered innovation. As a capstone experience for the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” course, the 4impact Challenge encouraged students to create groundbreaking solutions using emerging technologies set to transform our world. From AI-powered injury prevention tools to real-time drink safety devices and customized skincare tech, the event spotlighted inventive ideas tackling real-life challenges.
1st place winners Safe Vitals
This quarter, 25 undergraduate teams researched, prototyped and pitched their innovations to a panel of DU faculty and local professionals. Seven standout teams earned a place in the final showcase. But the 4impact Challenge is more than just a pitch competition, it’s a launchpad for risk-taking, creativity and confident presentation. It builds a space where driven students can test bold ideas and join a growing community of future-focused changemakers.

SmartFeet is an AI-powered insole that helps mid- to high-handicap golfers break through performance plateaus. With built-in force sensors, it tracks stance, pressure and weight shifts in real time, sending the data to a mobile app that delivers instant, personalized tips. Unlike lessons or range-only tools, SmartFeet works on the course to improve your swing where it matters most. One device, smarter feedback, better golf.
Wonder Brush: AI-Powered Hair Care That Gets Smarter With Every Stroke
WonderBrush is a smart hairbrush that uses embedded sensors and AI to detect damage, dryness and hydration levels in real time. With a built-in camera and moisture sensor, it analyzes your hair and recommends personalized products tailored to your needs. Unlike survey-based solutions or pricey salon visits, WonderBrush delivers accurate, on-the-spot guidance through a connected app, making healthy, confident hair not just a goal, but a daily reality.

U-Track: AI-Powered Journaling That Understands You
Utrack is a digital journaling tool designed to bridge the gap between traditional therapy and everyday mental health care. Using AI, optical character recognition and optional IoT integration, Utrack scans handwritten or typed entries, detects emotional patterns and offers personalized feedback, from mindfulness exercises to local mental health resources. By pairing sentiment analysis with heart rate data, Utrack delivers real-time insights and tracks mental wellbeing over time. With no need for insurance and a flexible subscription model, Utrack makes support more accessible, especially for young adults navigating stress, burnout or feeling emotionally overwhelmed.
Baller: Smarter Sports Betting Through AI and Education
Baller is an educational sports betting platform that helps users learn, practice and improve their betting strategies without risking real money. Built around four core pillars: education, simulation, insight. and wellness, Baller offers structured lessons, risk-free mock betting and AI-generated bet recommendations backed by advanced machine learning models. Unlike sportsbooks that profit from impulse betting, Baller empowers users with data-driven tools, emotional awareness features and personalized guidance. Designed for 18–34-year-olds immersed in sports culture, Baller transforms risky betting into a strategic learning experience.
Guardian Nest: Smart Crib Monitoring for Safer Sleep
Guardian Nest is a next-generation crib that uses embedded ECG, temperature and respiratory sensors to monitor an infant’s vital signs in real time. Designed to prevent suffocation and detect early signs of illness, Guardian Nest connects to a mobile app, alerting parents instantly to abnormal patterns. If a warning goes unacknowledged, emergency contacts are notified, ensuring no alert goes ignored. Unlike expensive smart bassinets that only soothe, Guardian Nest actively protects, blending health monitoring with peace of mind.

Reflection: Smart Recovery for ACL Rehab
Reflection is a wearable smart brace designed to transform ACL recovery through real-time feedback and AI-powered insights. Equipped with motion, pressure and temperature sensors, Reflection tracks knee stability, inflammation and risky movements, syncing to a mobile app that generates a 3D digital twin of the user’s knee. This allows athletes and physical therapists to monitor progress remotely and adjust rehab plans dynamically. Unlike passive braces or generic fitness trackers, Reflection offers joint-specific support, personalized alerts and data-backed recovery tools, all in one system.
With four expert judges poised to declare a winner, the room buzzed with a mix of professionalism and youthful energy. Anticipation rippled through the crowd as teams delivered their pitches, each one brimming with ambition. As the night came to a close, professor Joshua Ross and professor Neil Pollard took the stage, clutching comically oversized checks and declaratory medals ready to announce the winners of the third 4impact Challenge:

With prizes of $2,000, $1,200, and $400, respectively, each team celebrated its hard-earned recognition as the evening concluded with cheers and congratulations.
