Eric Schneider. Eric, welcome to the podcast and thanks for visiting us in the new media studio. Glad to have you here. Thanks for having me. So let’s get into it right away. Let’s start with you sharing a bit about your background, what you did after graduating from the University of Denver. What was your first steps after graduation and really kind of help us understand, did you have this clear direction or were you just figuring it out along the way?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, so I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in emergent digital practices and really needed a clear path because of the degree. So I went to graduate school at Goldsmiths University of London, literally a month after graduation. Flew over to London and got my master’s in interaction design and interaction research. My plan from there was really to go back to what I loved in college was the free exploration and the research into hardware and software technologies and trying to figure out how we could push the bounds. So the only path I could find to do that was to try to get my PhD in design and join a university research lab and be a professor and then research on the side. That all kind of blew up when I found a great company in Austin that had an RD lab and I actually met the founder Worley, who was a mentor of mine and basically gave them no chance to say no. And I moved to Austin and that kind of kicked off my career.
Eric Schneider:
So you kicked off your career. You did not get the PhD? No,
Joshua Ross:
No, I was nowhere close.
Eric Schneider:
What do you think about that decision?
Joshua Ross:
I still would go back to teaching or I would go to teaching. That’s always been a dream of mine, but I think it was the right decision. I’ve had a lot of fun and got into do a lot of different things that I think I wouldn’t have been able to achieve in a collegiate research lab.
Eric Schneider:
So when you think about your experiences both an undergrad and graduate to us at school, what were some of the things that you learned that kind of shaped your trajectory into the business world? Where it be around the creativity, the technology stuff that you experience inside and outside of the classroom? Certain people?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, it is definitely curiosity and fueling that curiosity. I had a phenomenal advisor all in my four years here in the art school who recognized early on that I wanted to focus on technology. I originally thought I was going to be a graphic designer. I also wanted to design airplane interiors via interior, I forget what they’re called really airplane interiors. That’s specific. Specific, yeah, I like flying a lot and industrial design is kind where I wanted to go and early on this professor was like, you should look into hardware engineering and software engineering and using that as a medium and kind of let me loose. And then the nature of that program and the art school is to kind of define your own path and figure out your focus. So that was the throughput that enabled me to find what I love doing now and made me figure out that I have to be constantly doing something.
And then resources here at du. There was a Penns grant at the time, I don’t know if that’s still available. I got that twice. That was, I think it was like $3,000 to do a summer research program to really explore new topics and research paths. And then in grad school, the similar thing, the one thing I learned from grad school was grounding your ideas. The biggest learning was your first idea is not your best idea, and they would often have us draft a hundred ideas before we would get to finding our solution for a long-term path.
Eric Schneider:
What do you mean by grounding your idea?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, I felt like in art we often did exploration, but once we got to an idea, we kind of went with it. Grad school showed us how to pull ideas into business cases, figure out what actually worked and stop designing for yourself and really design for the user’s needs. I mean, that’s interaction Research at its core is user needs, user understandings, user experience.
Eric Schneider:
I see that quite often in different spaces where people design because they make something super cool or it’s a new technology and it integrates into other really cool technology and early on, some of my engineers would come to me and say, check this thing out, and this was early cloud, and I’d be like, great, but who’s going to use it? And then there was just dead air after that.
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, yeah. That’s the problem right now with a lot of entrepreneurship and I’ve done it a lot and learned from my mistakes through it is building for yourself and kind of the fallacy of if I build it, they will come. Sometimes that works and sometimes we’ve heard huge success stories. I think Instagram’s a great example of a success story. They built something they wanted and then it became massive, but that’s usually never the case.
Eric Schneider:
Absolutely. So kind of pulling on that thread a little bit and kind of bringing us into a current day, you are the founder of Futureproof Studios, and so what is it, and kind of going along the theme of what we were just talking about, what are you building? What are you creating for other people?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, so Futureproof is kind of the culmination of everything I’ve learned over the past 10 years. Being an entrepreneur, we focus on a number of things. One is zone of genius. We believe that venture capital right now is flawed. They focus on investing in solar founders or group of founders and expect them to be the leaders of an organization up until they’re a billion dollar company. We believe that every stage has a different person and every person has a different tool set that they’re good at. For me, I’m early stage, my co-founder, he’s great at go-to-market and growth up to about 3 million in revenue. Our other co-founder is great at operations, forming businesses and managing them. One thing we know about ourselves is we’re not good at scaling, so we focus just on that. My role in the business is to come up with ideas and execute on them, and then I hand them off once we get market validation. The other thing, and that kind of fits into our core belief of right people, right time, and then with all of that, our goal is to get our businesses to a point where we know that scale is inevitable and we pull in an operator, we give them founder stock and we push it out of the company either through acquisition or the operator takes it and runs it and we support it. Over time,
Eric Schneider:
You’re an internal incubator and at some point in time these ideas have to go fly on their own and you identify the right people to make that happen.
Joshua Ross:
Correct. We’re not about making unicorns, we’re about just getting on base.
Eric Schneider:
I like that. So one of your projects is Vibe Pirate, and so I’m going to pull this quote directly from the website. Tell us what kind of music you are in the mood for and the Vibe Pirate. AI builds the perfect playlist, use our enhancer to fine tune the vibe, we’ll take care of the rest. So my daughters, I sent it to them and they’re big fans. My daughter goes to school in Lawrence, Kansas. It created Unlit Serenades and Lawrence loved the playlist. My daughter who lives in New York, it created Indie Brooklyn Girl. Once again, a huge fan. I look at it and I’m like, wow, this is an amazing tool because I’m a Spotify listener and I think DJ X is absolutely terrible and this fills an amazing gap. So a why, I mean, I think I kind of answered it a little bit, but why did you start this and talk me through about how the success so far?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, this is one of those unique cases that you build something for yourself and then people are like, this is really cool. It’s your Instagram moment. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, except for mine doesn’t make a lot of money, but
Eric Schneider:
It didn’t either when it got acquired by Facebook.
Joshua Ross:
True. So I built it because Spotify burned me enough. I wanted a really specific use case. I wanted a Jimmy Buffett playlist that didn’t have country music that was a little bit more dad rock and had the vibe of hanging out in your backyard with the kids grilling playing in the pool, and Spotify just has not produced that. Even their AI DJ doesn’t produce it. And so I set out to build it as more of an experiment to understand how other tools work, and then I brought it to a AI meetup that I go to here in town and it blew up and we’re nearing, I think 7,500 users right now, and it’s been about four months.
Eric Schneider:
So what’s next with Vibe Pirate?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, so Vibe Pirate is just pushing forward. We’re tweaking the models. Every few months that new models come out, we have to tweak it, but we have stumbled upon a bigger opportunity that we’re calling Vibe Map, and it’s the realization that about over a hundred million songs are completely invisible to LLMs because they lack the proper metadata and the proper understanding of what that song is, how it feels, and how it can fit into a scenario. We’re seeing about two and a half billion queries through LLMs showing that people are using LLMs as Search over Google, and there’s a greater movement for people to discover music through those search capabilities. So you’re looking at a massive loss for the music industry if they don’t change right away and figuring out how to assign the right metadata. Metadata is also just a problem in the music industry across the board.
Eric Schneider:
Explain what metadata is.
Joshua Ross:
So it’s what you assign to an MP three that’s invisible to the user. That is either genre information, song information, artist information is usually pretty high level. The genre is often wrong and other information can also be wrong as well. A lot of indie artists don’t even do it, and without that information there’s nothing that becomes searchable. Your song exists on the internet, but nothing more. So we’ve built a system that has a 98% accuracy rate, which is one of the highest in the industry at indexing that music, assigning vibes, understanding the emotion of the song, the look and feel, the orchestration, everything so that we can create better playlisting and better discoverability to solve this problem that’s actually going to be a 50 billion revenue loss for the music industry over the next three years.
Eric Schneider:
Explain that. How is it a revenue loss for the music industry, which is making a lot of money? It seems like it’s more of a loss for the artists that aren’t being discovered because nobody knows that their songs are out there.
Joshua Ross:
For sure, for sure. I mean, it is the unit economics of music. The artist is the last person to be fed, unfortunately, so distribution occurs through several different companies and every company gets paid along the way. The assumption we have is that the new discovery platforms are all going to be run off of these LLMs, even Spotify is going to figure it out soon and without the proper indexing. Again, it’s not, the music just doesn’t show up. I think I read this morning, I read I think 68% of all songs on Spotify are never listened to.
Eric Schneider:
Wow. That is a crazy
Joshua Ross:
Stat.
Eric Schneider:
This is really cool by the way, because what you’re doing is you obviously have a passion for music. You, you’re creative, you want to build things, you love ai, you’re bringing all these things together, so every day I’m guessing you wake up and you’re like, this is awesome.
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, yeah. It’s hard because I have too many ideas, but to kind of round it out and how Vibe Map attaches to Vibe Pirate, right now we are creating playlists based on known knowledge, but once we have the Vibe Map database all up and running, you could ask for a Johnny Cash playlist and instead of getting the assumption that it would be a country playlist, you might get an indie artist in France that sounds like Johnny Cash as opposed to being a country artist, and you get these playlists now that are completely unique to the look, feel, vibe and emotion of a song rather than the perceived knowledge of what the song is.
Eric Schneider:
I think that’s amazing. It is really creating, it’s almost democratizing the music industry and creating an opportunity for these sounds and these artists to be heard. I mean, I talk to my kids a lot and they go to a lot of music. They go to festivals and they talk about some of these artists that are playing on a side stage one year, but they get heard, they create awareness and the next time they see ’em, they they’re playing on the main stage, maybe not at the most opportune time, but that’s one way they’re actually out into these festivals. You’re actually creating that opportunity digitally for them.
Joshua Ross:
Correct, correct. Yeah. And you got to think how long did it take ’em to get just to the side stage? Totally. And discoverability is the biggest issue in music right now. Then on the other side, you have to think about music for movies and commercials. One person spends potentially a day or a week listening to hundreds of thousands of tracks to match the perfect emotion to commercial. What if you could say this is a cereal commercial about a sports team eating the right cereal in the morning, and it produces the perfect track for that based on the vibe and the sound of the song and how it matches the voiceover and the overall visuals of the commercial.
Eric Schneider:
I’m going to shift gears a little bit and we’re going to talk about artificial intelligence. It seems like it becomes now a common theme on this podcast, but I think it’s incredibly important and it touches just so many different industries and you’ve been building software for a long time, and so I want to get your perspective on how AI has changed not only the way you build software, but how has it made it easier, reduced potentially the number of people that are involved Time to market?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah. I’ll give you a great example. We are launching this month some new software called View. It’s a sales coach that lives in your meetings and helps you direct the conversation and spot moments that you might’ve missed. That tool I’ve been working on since October, there’s been so many iterations. It was a Chrome extension, it was a website, and then about six weeks ago I was like, you know what? We’re not getting what we need. I need to build a desktop application. Windows Mac supported on both. It’s launching this week and again, yeah, six weeks to build that. It would’ve cost us before 500 k, probably a team of three or four over the course of two years, and it costs me like a hundred bucks a month. So it’s just become a really powerful tool to get you really from zero to one, I think past it. Building out a dev team that uses AI is really helpful, but not relying on it fully because there are certain things that AI is good for and AI is not good for.
Eric Schneider:
So you’re talking about going from a half a million dollars and three or four people to you and doing it for a hundred bucks a month. What’s the difference over the few years? What are some of the tools, what are some of the processes that actually reduce this a time to market and
Joshua Ross:
Reduce the cost? I think the biggest thing is planning at the beginning. Claude from philanthropic especially Opus 4.1 is a phenomenal tool to brainstorm and to build out project plans and to get all that together, and you can do that pretty fast. And then the next stage is then how do you translate it into code and getting it done. It really depends on the complexity of what you’re doing. I think for a lot of people’s software, like a wrap lit or a lovable or a Bolt is a great first step to get you to paid customers, but for pretty complex stuff like what we’re doing using Cursor with Cloud code is kind of the best path and my workflow really is to use my background as a product manager and get all the right information together as if I was going to ship it to a dev team to build it and then take that into cloud code and work with cloud code to actually execute it within Cursor. And then I also use either chat GBT or Claude on the outside as my coding assistant to get it done. So all these tools help you, especially product managers, get that zero to one super, super fast and then it’s just natural drop of cost because you’re not having to translate what your vision is out to another developer, you can just kind of tweak it yourself. That’s amazing.
Eric Schneider:
And if you tie that in with all the cloud services out there as well in terms of not having to build and pay for a development environment in terms of the servers, the server licenses, the support around there and then the production environment as well. It’s amazing. First just the reduction in cost, pay, pay as you go, but also how much faster you can do that and scale up
Joshua Ross:
And get to an answer. For sure. For sure. And even on the design side, I was talking to someone yesterday, they wanted to hire a designer and I said right now at your stage, you don’t need to hire a designer. There are tools out there right now that will take a napkin sketch and make it into a UI that you can throw into Claude and say, build this, and it just works A lot of view that we’re launching this week. I wrote it in my sketchbook, took a photo of it and put into V zero and then V zero built a full functioning clip through prototype and then we’ve used that to translate into working code.
Eric Schneider:
What excites you about AI over the next 24 months? Is there something out there that we don’t know about or you think that’s kind of under hyped?
Joshua Ross:
What I would say is I’m really excited to see what happens before the end of the year. We just had a big open AI announcement with GPT five. I’m excited to see what Philanthropics coming out with. I think they’re sitting on potentially something big. They released CLO code recently and that’s just been mind blowingly good, and so I’m really interested there kind of stepping back. I think it’s more my interests are more about the creators right now because in my belief, we’re kind of in the GeoCities era of AI development where all of a sudden you have this giant group of people that are technically inclined that now have a tool to make whatever they want, and it’s unlocking barriers that always existed where you’d have to find a friend that was a developer or you had to have money to build a website. Now you can do anything and people are building everything, really anything, and that’s what we’re doing.
I mean, we built VI Pirate. My question is what’s the evolution of AI enabled software over the next 24 months? Where do we see AI evolve? How design works on websites, how we interact with tools, where it lives? I think a lot of people are answering this question by adding a chat GBT style interface to their website or cloning a lot of that experience. I saw an Atlassian demo that was really just a chat GBT clone, but no one’s really looking at the edge cases and really defining where we’re going with it. And I think that’s what philanthropic and open AI are like, well, we’ll build the frameworks, let’s let the builders build out where we’re going, but we haven’t seen that shift yet. And I have my own assumptions, but
Eric Schneider:
That’s a really good point. I read an article a couple of days ago that most AI initiatives within medium to large corporations are failing and people are using artificial intelligence, Chad Claude to write emails and to do proposals and things like that. But in terms of actually building processes and software into the systems, that’s not happening and that’s why there’s some concern around where is AI going if there’s not
Joshua Ross:
This larger adoption? I heard a guy on LinkedIn say that SaaS is dead. If you want to have a software for your company, you’ll spend two hours on lit or bolt and you’ll build it yourself. So I tested his assumptions
And I went and talked to a chief people at an insurance company. I said, would you build software yourself to help fulfill your HR task? He’s like, no way. If it took me out two hours, no way. I talked to another person who’s account manager at a SaaS company and she’s like, I need tools, but I’m not willing to sit down and learn how to build them. So I think there’s going to be a progression where there’s an instant serve tool with intelligence built into it that serves it, and I’ve been researching that topic and actually built a prototype that does just that. So
Eric Schneider:
Interesting. Well, I look back into the early two thousands when there wasn’t a computer on every desk, and once people started to use computers and everyone within an organization used computers and they started using email effectively, and all of a sudden we had this ability because of these devices, these computers in our pockets to work outside of the office and become more productive. And we had these things called VPNs where we could actually connect securely into the office. These were now integrated into the workflows and the processes of organizations to make them more efficient, to make them get time to market or complete tasks a lot faster. That’s where I think we need to figure out where we’re going with artificial intelligence because the Microsoft Office suite back then was great because it allowed you to do things, but it was the systems and the processes and the tools that were integrated in the system that
Joshua Ross:
Really help companies accelerate. I think at its core computer use over the last 20 years has been different skins of word processing. The office suite is just putting words in different ways. How does that evolve and how does that change and how does that become something different with ai? I’m not convinced that it’s AR or vr. I think the hardware technology is not there yet, but there’s going to be something, a shift between now and 2035 that I think is going to be really profound and we’re going to see it and go, oh yeah, and it’s going to be easy. It’s like when the iPhone came out, it just completely changed how we used
Eric Schneider:
Phones. So given the shift, AYA is driving, I both, I know we both believe in that it’s reducing the need for entry level workers. We’re at a university and these entry level workers, these students come out of college looking for an entry level job, not with a lot of hard skills, but looking for the opportunity to be trained to do certain jobs. But what’s happening is AI is kind of taking away these entry level jobs. So in your opinion, what skill sets with the next generation of these graduates, where do they need to stand out, make themselves valuable? Because right now unemployment for current graduates is close to 6% and it’s over six for computer science graduates are traditional CS skills enough and just traditional liberal arts skills and human skills that we develop in universities, is that enough?
Joshua Ross:
I want to first say I disagree that AI is taking away entry level jobs. I want to hear this. I think that AI is not yet capable of doing that. It’s capable of automating tasks, great, but having a junior developer come in and work on a specific area still needs to be done. CS hard skills also great understanding how software works and functions, kind of the core fundamentals, I think everyone should know, even non CS majors, but I think what becomes deadly and where you differentiate yourself is how you use ai. My generation I believe is the Google generation. We learned really well how to search and could really find anything through search engines. I believe this generation is the AI generation and learning how to use AI properly. And it all goes back to prompting and context. And if you’re a CS major that you just graduated college, you’re trying to figure out what to do, I would get cloud code rep lit one of those tools and become the best at it and show how you can use your degree with it to be the most efficient junior developer out there. And at the end of the day when I’m hiring a developer, I’m looking at their portfolio of what they’ve built, not necessarily how many years they’ve been in as a developer. All those different skills go into finding the right hire. If you’re just taking your degree and not using AI and still believe that AI is not going to be a part of the world or the workforce, you’re going to have a hard time finding a job, but it’s really just adopting it and leaning into it.
Eric Schneider:
That’s a great point, and I talk to students all the time. It’s not using AI to do the work for you, but making you more efficient, making the work better, making you more productive, really raising your iq. Because if you just take one of my prompts for a homework assignment I provide and you just run it through ai, there’s no reason you even just show up for class. What you need to do is really kind of think through it on your own and then figure out how AI can push that project or idea or that prompt
Joshua Ross:
Forward. For sure. For sure. Just this morning, I was using it a great way to do an automation. I think of AI as automating tasks that used to take time.
So I was doing market research for a new idea I had this morning and literally while I was taking a shower, I put Claude onto a deep research topic to understand the competitive landscape, potential revenue opportunities, and a loose go to market strategy. And it knocked that out. It was great, but now I have everything I need to take and adapt to my own skillset and grow the pitch deck my own and kind do all of that. And that kind of research used to take weeks, months, even my first company, I spent eight weeks doing research before I even pitched anyone, and now we can do it in 10 minutes, and that’s kind of where I see the automation.
Eric Schneider:
So how do you think higher ed should approach teaching ai? Do we focus on specific tools or instead build these frameworks and let the students adapt to whatever tools come next? Like you’re saying, they’re becoming very AI literate and so we tell ’em the exact tools, they’re just going to go do that, as opposed to saying, here’s the problem, here’s a framework or approach we want you to take. You go figure it out.
Joshua Ross:
I think we’re in an era of AI right now where it’s all about exploration. And first the professor that’s saying don’t use AI in this class is doing them a disservice. Teaching how to use AI is phenomenal, but exploring different tools is the path in my opinion. I think one of the greatest things you can do is take the same prompt and put it into grok, Claude Llama and chat GBT and see how all the prompts differ and how all the answers differ. Put all of them on deep research and see how the research changes and then make your decision from that. And I think that then becomes a powerful tool because at the end of the day, still go back to it. The ones that will win and an AI world are those that know how to prompt and how to provide context because without context, you don’t have the right output, and without the right prompt, you don’t have the right output. And it’s all figuring that out. And once you have that unlock, you can do anything.
Eric Schneider:
So is there a risk if AI, or pardon me, is there a risk if higher education doesn’t adapt?
Joshua Ross:
I think so. I mean, I think there’s a risk going back to vibe map. If someone says, oh no, we don’t need our music indexed for LLMs, then it becomes invisible. And I think that’s the same with a teacher that doesn’t teach AI is their students become invisible and we kind of have to give them those skills. I mean, my generation, it was the skills to use a computer. Effectively, this generation is the skills to use AI effectively.
Eric Schneider:
So if you think about your career, what through lines connects the art, the technology, and now this AI driven experimentation?
Joshua Ross:
Yeah, I think it’s interesting. I think art is the foundation. Art is the experience, it’s the storytelling, it’s the compassion, it’s everything that exists. Technology, hardware, software, AI are just mediums for creating that art. And art really gave me the introspective to figure out the right path and to pull that into everything that we do. And I think everyone’s doing art in different ways, but honestly, the art department, it does a phenomenal job at teaching us how to think and how to take criticism and how to use the tools we have available to create something incredible. So the throughput really is arts, the foundation and the technology, ai, computers, et cetera, are just the tools we have to build what we want.
Eric Schneider:
So I have a couple rapid fire questions for you. One I hadn’t prepared for, but I have to know it because you just keep going. Claude, Claude, Claude and chat. GPT is like the last thing you ever mentioned. Why
Joshua Ross:
Claude taught me how to program again it last October and cloud code is just incredible. I faced the biggest bug of my life with one of my software sets, switched to cloud code, and he fixed it immediately. It was incredible chat. GBTI think has its space in my opinion. GBT five is a flop. Talked to other people, they had other opinions, but I really loved 4.0 and did a lot of work in 4.0. But now I’m finding that the creative aspect of the new chat, GBT is really generalized. So I’m Claude all the way and I think I just need to stick with Claude in the future.
Eric Schneider:
Okay. How do you maintain and grow your professional network?
Joshua Ross:
Always be networking. So I have a series of meetups that I go to biweekly. I try to have at least five networking meetings every week. And I use, the most valuable question you can have for a networking meeting is who can you introduce me to or who should I be talking to? Always grow your network. You’re only as powerful as your network. So
Eric Schneider:
What’s a book that you’re into right
Joshua Ross:
Now? I haven’t been doing enough reading. I got burnt out reading, but I’ll throw a book that is my favorite, the messy middle. It’s about that moment around product market fit, your company’s growing, and all the chaos that ensues and how to fix those problems. Scott Balinski, I think co-founder of Behan. Awesome. Wrote it.

I’m so excited. I was the world’s worst software developer. My first job was in software development, and AI has now unlocked me to do things that I could never do before. And as an idea guy, I’m just like, I’m so excited. I’ve been working nights and weekends because I’m just having too much fun building
