The journey to a graduate degree is exciting, but it can also feel nerve-wracking and challenging.
The Daniels College of Business graduate admissions team is committed to supporting applicants and making a rigorous process as smooth and transparent as possible. A critical step along the way is an admissions interview, after you have submitted your application.
This hourlong session with an admissions officer is an opportunity to show you are ready to pursue a graduate program at Daniels, as well as a chance to learn more about what the College has to offer.
Hannah Hansard, assistant director of graduate admissions, has conducted hundreds of interviews and has several tips to help you stand out.
1. Do your homework
Long before you meet with a member of the admissions team, begin researching the University of Denver, Daniels and the program you are applying to. Be prepared to explain what drew you to Daniels and what led you to apply. Keep the “why” in mind.
“Whenever we’re interviewing candidates we look for motivation, we look for drive and we look for long-term goals,” Hansard said. “Applicants who are lacking those qualities usually have a hard time succeeding in a graduate program.”
A graduate degree is a big commitment; finding a school where you will be happy is critical. Take the time to ensure Daniels’ vision and values jibe with yours. After all, when you enroll in a graduate program, it’s also a serious investment for the institution.
“We’re admitting you knowing you’ll represent us after you graduate,” Hansard said. “Our name will be associated with yours. It’s important that your values align with the College’s values.”
Plus, applicants who don’t do their research can come off as unprepared, and like they aren’t interested in what the school represents.
2. It’s OK to brag!
Remember: An interview is about you! Daniels admissions officers want to get acquainted, learn about your experiences, and hear about your personal, professional and academic successes.
“Think about the things that set you apart and make you a unique candidate,” Hansard said. “Bring up experiences you think could benefit your cohort, your classmates and DU’s student population.”
Be specific in your answers! Your interviewer will look for concrete examples that illustrate your strengths.
3. Keep it professional
Admissions officers expect you to take their interviews seriously. The way you appear in person or on camera is a reflection of how much you care, Hansard said. “Professionalism” can be subjective, but the admissions team recommends business professional or business casual dress.
Most students conduct their interviews online. Ensure you have a reliable internet connection and situate yourself in a quiet location, without distractions. Avoid multitasking; it is important to focus on the conversation at hand, Hansard said.
4. Demonstrate good communication skills
The most successful interviewees answer questions in a clear, concise, direct manner, Hansard said. Long-winded answers can show a lack of situational awareness.
“Feel free to elaborate on some things, but if you’ve said what you needed to say, then just end it there. Don’t be afraid of silence,” Hansard said. “That is a valuable skill to have in graduate school as well.”
That strategy also allows you to make the most of your interview appointment. You want to ensure you have time to answer all of the interviewer’s questions, while also leaving time to ask your own questions at the end.
5. Bring your own questions
While an admissions interview evaluates your readiness for grad school, it’s also an opportunity to learn more about Daniels, DU and the program you are applying to.
“Bringing questions shows your interest and displays the curiosity you need to succeed in your program,” Hansard said. “The more introspective the questions, the more details you want to know, the more specifics you ask for, the better it looks on your part.”
Not to mention, the admissions team has valuable insight into the graduate student experience and is eager to help applicants however it can.
6. Be yourself
Ultimately, an admissions interview is about finding the right fit for both parties. Be confident in who you are and embrace opportunities to display vulnerability.
“It doesn’t have to be scary,” Hansard said. “We want candidates to feel like they can be their authentic selves and express themselves in our programs.”
