What are your responsibilities and contributions as a member of the Values Committee?
We have, as a committee, led faculty and staff case studies centered around students who might be encountering a difficult issue in the classroom. We’ve launched the Why Race Matters in the Workplace event, this year named “Bringing your Authentic Self to Work”–an annual panel discussion, sponsored by a company (this year was sponsored by FirstBank and Pepsi). This event focuses on hearing from panelists’ progression from college through their careers as it relates to various markers of their backgrounds/identities. I’ve also helped lead the Daniels team for the National Diversity Case Competition at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Each year, I take a group of students to IU (since 2019) to participate in a case competition centered around a case related to equity in business. In the past 5 years, we have placed in the top 3 teams twice, and have also received runner-up twice as well.
What motivates you in serving in this role and how do you find it fulfilling and important for your professional development?
I love engaging students through co-curricular activities that allow them to grow their understanding of their own identities and those of others, through events that also foster professional development such as case competitions and panel discussions/networking events! Having sponsors also engage with the topic helps create buy-in and re-enforces the importance of the work.
