The School of Accountancy has a reputation of excellence and strives to “rise above the numbers” by creating opportunities for our students to succeed. Recent Master of Accountancy graduate Taylor Belke was honored with the Outstanding Master of Accounting Student award this spring and was offered a full-time position with Deloitte. During her time in the SoA program, she was awarded several scholarships which assisted in her attending DU. Reflecting on her time here, Taylor looked back on why she chose this program and her overall thoughts on the SoA.
How did you choose DU/Daniels?
I began exploring schools in Colorado because I knew it was where I wanted to begin my career. I love being outside, and I really enjoy all that the great state has to offer. I ended up choosing the University of Denver because it exceeded all of my needs for a masters of accountancy program. Everyone I talked to during the application process was extremely accommodating, and I felt that they were truly dedicated to helping me make my decision. Additionally, I did not know what area of accounting I wanted to go into yet, but I knew DU had classes and experience for whatever I would end up choosing.
How did the scholarships you received allow you to attend Daniels?
The financial assistance that I received made attending DU an extremely easy choice. Planning to pay for another year of school is stressful and the scholarships that I received helped to alleviate that stress. I did not feel pressured to find a second job in addition to my teaching assistant position, and I was able to place my focus on school, my CPA exam, and finding a job for after graduation. The scholarships I received were a great reminder that hard work can pay off, and I am exceptionally grateful for all of the generous donors that continue to encourage an education at DU.
What has the School of Accountancy program been like?
The graduate accounting program at DU was a great experience start to finish. The advising and orientation staff helped to provide a smooth transition for me into the fall quarter. Since I wanted to stay in Denver after graduation, career services assisted me on my job search. They were very involved, and helped me every step of the way through mock interviews, networking events, and more. Additionally, my advisor helped me to select classes that would be the most beneficial to my future career path.
All of the professors I had during my time at Daniels were very knowledgeable and supportive. They were all able to apply their real-world accounting experience in the classroom to provide us with valuable lessons that we could apply in the near future. The classes were also very helpful in preparing for the CPA exam. Several of my teachers covered topics that I later saw on the exams, and I felt genuinely prepared to answer the related questions.
What are the big highlights?
The highlight of the masters program was all of the connections that it provided. All of my classes were between 20 to 40 students, many of whom I got to know very well. Between my classmates and the teachers, I was always able to find help with school work, career advice, and anything else I needed. Overall, attending DU made my transition to Denver an extremely easy one, and I will always be thankful for that!
