January 25, 2019, marked the kickoff for the new Reiman Mentoring program, which has paired over 35 undergraduate and graduate students with alumni from the Reiman School of Finance. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive and indicates a strong desire by our alumni and students to engage with one another. Students and mentors talk—in person or virtually—twice each quarter, sharing experiences and advice about careers in finance.

Several panels were hosted by the club this winter, including Women in Finance and Technical Analysis. The year will finish with visits from Northwestern Mutual and Equity Methods. The club plans to keep adding opportunities like these for alumni and other finance professionals to share industry knowledge, trends and career advice with students. Additional online delivery methods are being considered, including videotaped talks by alumni on a variety of topics. Please reach out to JP Tremblay, faculty club advisor, or Zach Wilson, student club president, if you are interested in contributing.

The club is also encouraging students to use their financial skills in service-learning opportunities. One avenue is through Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management’s Ready for American Hospitality Program. Through partnership with the African Community Center, Fritz Knoebel has created a unique immersive training program that pairs Daniels’ hospitality students with refugees to prepare them for jobs in the industry. Reiman Teaching Professor Andy Sherbo has generously volunteered to lead the personal finance unit of their five-week program, and club leaders are exploring how Reiman students can provide personal finance one-on-one mentoring. This promises to be an opportunity for our students to learn as much as they teach through increased cultural awareness and understanding.

Future goals include providing increased support for internship placement, as experience in the workforce is an increasingly important factor in employment readiness upon graduation. Faculty and staff at the Remain School look forward to working with our alumni as we strive to make this an attainable, core component of our students’ time at the Daniels College of Business.
