President Obama has launched a campaign to close the gender wage gap. But financial experts in Colorado say it’s a gap that’s been blown out of proportion.
The President is planning a city-to-city tour and Denver is on the list.
He says it is unfair that women get paid less for doing the same amount of work as men. The number is about 77-cents to the dollar.
Local university professors say that’s not true once you factor in education, experience and years on the job.
“When those factors are controlled for, women make nearly as much as men,” says Dr. Sharon Lassar, Director of the University of Denver School of Accountancy. “I’ve seen variables between 93-cents for every dollar that a man makes and some even higher than that, so the disparity is really not as great as the popular belief.”
President Obama says women still don’t get the fair treatment they deserve.
