Aimee Hamilton, assistant professor of management, was awarded the Academy of Management Research Method Division’s 2017 SAGE Publications/Robert McDonald Advancement of Organizational Research Methodology Award. Hamilton, Dennis Gioia, professor of management at Penn State University; and Kevin Corley, professor of management at Arizona State University authored the paper “Seeking Qualitative Rigor in Inductive Research: Notes on the Gioia Methodology.”
The award was given to the group who “made a significant contribution to research methodology.”
In the paper, the authors outline a systematic approach to new concept development and grounded theory articulation that is designed to bring ‘‘qualitative rigor’’ to the conduct and presentation of inductive research. They focus on all the areas of the research process including design of the research question, data collection, data analysis and grounded theory development.
This paper gives researchers an approach for ensuring the scientific rigor of inductive, interpretive studies while still preserving the creative and revelatory power of this qualitative methodology. The paper also provides a format for credibly presenting qualitative research in a field dominated by the traditional quantitative scientific paradigm.
“It was especially meaningful to have this paper recognized by the Research Method Division because business research tends to emphasize quantitative methods,” Hamilton said. “Having our qualitative methodology recognized was encouraging support for diverse approaches to methodological rigor.”
The paper also received an Emerald Group Publishing “Citation of Excellence 2016” recognition as one of the “most highly cited and highly influential papers” in the areas of Business Management, Finance, Accounting, Economics, and Marketing.” According to the Web of Science database, “as of March/April 2017, this highly cited paper received enough citations to place it in the top 1 percent of the academic field of Economics and Business.”
