My experience at Daniels prepared me to lead with character and conviction. The proformas and other analysis tools used in my courses are still useful for me in my day-to-day operations. More important than knowing how to analyze potential projects, I believe that conducting yourself in an ethical manner is crucial to having a long-term, successful career in the commercial real estate industry.”

Hosted by the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP), this annual event is a competition between graduate students of the Burns School and the University of Colorado Real Estate Program. Both schools receive the same project challenge at the start of winter quarter and a class is formed around working with industry professional to decide best use and feasibility of the property, financing, marketing and design of the project incorporating LEED and other areas of sustainability. After an internal competition to decide who will best represent their programs, each school’s chosen team presents their ideas at an annual NAIOP dinner of 700+ attendees. A pre-chosen panel of judges decides the winner of the competition based on real-life analysis of all phases of the development. To date, the Burns School has enjoyed five victories in the eight years of this competition.
HOME BUILDERS ACADEMY
The Burns School Home Builders Academy creates a hands-on learning experience for construction management students at DU by partnering with local homebuilder industry partners to create a home building learning lab. Students will not only be exposed to the home building process and the management of that process through the lab experience, but they will also be exposed to the business aspects of planning and running the many homebuilder supply chain entities needed to support the industry. In addition to the on-hands learning lab, the Burns School is also developing a fully online non-degree Home Builders Academy Certificate comprised of a series of short courses designed to address the keys topics associated with building, managing, and growing the residential construction company. This online certificate program is coming soon.
MUELLER REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT FUND
Started by Professor Glenn Mueller and his wife, Jan, the Fund provides capital for students enrolled in the Real Estate Capital Market class to manage. Students analyze and select real estate investments, establish portfolio strategies and carefully evaluate portfolio performance.
