Doina Chichernea, PhD joined the Reiman School of Finance as an associate professor in fall 2017. She came to Denver from the University of Toledo, Ohio, where she taught for the last nine years. Chichernea earned her doctorate in finance from the University of Cincinnati and her MBA in finance from the University of Toledo.

Chichernea’s research interests are in the area of empirical asset pricing, with a special focus on the connection between idiosyncratic, firm-specific, risk and returns. She studies risk based explanations for asset pricing anomalies, specifically instances where return variation seems to defy the basic tenet of “high risk, high return”. Her work has been published in reputable journals such as the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Financial Management, European Financial Management, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Financial Research, the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and the Journal of Real Estate Research, among others.

Chichernea has taught various classes, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, including Investments, Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. She also participated in international joint degree MBA programs offered at the University of Toledo, teaching on site at the PSG College in Coimbatore, India and offering live, online classes to students in Cairo, Egypt.

Chichernea was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania. When not teaching or working on research, she loves traveling, reading and spending time with her family. New to Colorado, Chichernea currently lives with her 17-month old son and her husband, Anthony “Tony” Holder, PhD, who also joined the Daniels College of Business this fall as an associate professor in the School of Accountancy.
