Daniels 2012 in Review: Looking Back on a Monumental Year

2012 has been another successful year at Daniels thanks to all our fellow Daniels Pioneers. But what has made 2012 so monumental?

Community/Student Life

This year we had five impressionable speakers in our Voices of Experience speaker series including:

  • Kevin Reddy, CEO of Noodles and Company
  • Kent Thiry, CEO of DaVita
  • Carol Tome, CFO of Home Depot
  • Michael Long, CEO of Arrow Electronics
  • Stewart Stockdale, EVP of Western Union

We had two Pioneer Connections events, one at Wash Park Boathouse and another at Tony’s Market, as well as an alumni social event at Snooze. These events brought together Daniels Pioneers of the past and present to network and reconnect with old friends.

Business students at Daniels and other business schools competed in the 2012 Race and Case competitions using classroom knowledge combined with their skills on the slopes taking experiential learning to the next level.

Daniels also had two Marketing Roundtable events. The summer event was a panel revolving around digital marketing and success stories. The second event we were honored to have Jung Park, founder of MetroBoom, speak about personal branding.

Undergraduate Programs had a Daniels Field Day allowing undergrads to enjoy themselves before exams with tug-o-war, t-shirt dyeing, marble grab, water balloon toss, and much more. In addition, Undergrad programs also had a welcome back BBQ at the start of Fall 2012 quarter.

Lastly, to end the year Daniels Snowball event reached an amazing attendance of over 450 guests.

Bragging Rights

The University of Denver hosted the first Presidential Debate in the Magness arena and allowed students to be part of the excitement through DebateFest. The University was able to bring members of the community together on this festive day to celebrate a special moment in history.

In February the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management ranked in top 20 hospitality programs in the U.S. Go HRTM!

In March the Daniels PMBA program ranked for the third year in a row in the U.S. News rankings for it’s part-time business school programs and Daniels ranked #57 in the 2012 Bloomberg Businessweek Best Undergraduate Programs Ranking

Beta Alpha Psi students also had two teams who won first place in two separate competitions—Dealing with Change and Out of the Box in the 2012 Regional Meeting.

In October the Daniels EMBA program was named in the Top 100 EMBA programs worldwide Financial Times for the 5th year in a row!

In December seniors Reem Hassani and Joseph Zhang were selected to compete in the finals of the 2013 Inter-Collegiate Business Competition.

Memorable Moments

Daniels management Professor Gordon Von Stroh passed away due to Lou Gehrig’s disease after being a part of Daniels since 1967.

February we had a leap year, which we won’t be seeing again until 2016!

Daniels competed in Social Madness and made it past the first round to the brackets! Thanks to everyone who voted!

In November the University of Denver accepted an invitation to become The Summit League’s newest member institution.

Home Improvements

  • Academic Commons are still going through continuous improvements.
  • Mary Reed received a nice facelift on its exterior before the debate.
  • Daniels fishbowls got an upgrade with new tables and televisions to plug in laptops for group studying.
  • University of Denver bookstore was remodeled.

With such an exciting year behind us we have much to look forward to next year in 2013 with renovations for Margery Reed projected and the completion of the academic commons, more great speaker series and networking opportunities including a VOE with John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, in January.
