This summer after the tragedy of the Aurora theater shooting, Daniels EMBA students Cohort 58 joined together in a community project to honor those whose lives were taken, in particular one of our own, Alex Teves. The EMBA students reached out to the DU community in addition to the kids and faculty at Bruce Randolph, asking for help with making 1000 origami cranes for Cranes for Joy. These cranes were of different sizes and colors, some had messages and others held power in being blank. Each crane a symbol made stronger through the hands of the community.
In Japan cranes are a symbol of honor, peace, and loyalty, and it is with great pride that we have brought a strong symbol onto the DU campus. There is a Japanese saying that a person who folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted a wish. With these 1000 cranes for Alex, our hearts go out to his family and friends and the many other victims involved in this tragedy.
The 1000 cranes were finished this week and installed in the Morgridge College of Education, where Alex was studying for his MA Counseling in Psychology. The cranes will be presented to Alex’s family to celebrate his life.
Thanks to Rumi and EMBA Cohort 58.
If you’d like to get involved, Cranes for Joy is making 1000 Cranes for Peace to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Please fold one crane (or more) and mail it to:
