What is Race & Case?
- It is a business ethics case competition and ski challenge.
- It is unique to the Daniels College of Business as no other business school combines a case challenge with a NASTAR race.
- Provides a unique real-world setting where students apply critical thinking and new approaches to ethical decision making and behavior.
- Graduate business school programs are invited to bring a team of four to six people to the 2009 Daniels Race & Case.
- All members must compete in the case, and at least two males and two females must participate in the NASTAR race, or must accept a time of 50 seconds for each missing member.
Why is it important/What's in it for me?
- It's a great resume builder and it is fun!
- Students compete against other business schools for the Daniels Cup.
How much does it cost?
- Registration fee: $3,000 for external teams, with a $500 deposit applied toward total registration fee.
- Cost includes hotels, chartered transportation to DIA and competition sites, networking events, lift tickets, race fees, all meals and the awards banquet.
- Airfare, ski rental and transportation on Thursday from the airport to Denver not included.
How do I prepare for the case?
- Each team is given the same case with which to prepare a presentation. Your team will meet to discuss the case and prepare a recommendation for the judges, as if they are the board of directors or stakeholders for the company/organization.
- For additional assistance, speak with professors at your college and professionals in related industries.
What's this "race" part?
- This is a NASTAR race held at Vail. Skiers and snowboarders welcome.
- Handicaps are based on the NASTAR scoring system.
Team Requirements
- Each mixed-gender team consists of four to six students with at least two women, two men, and one international student.
- All team members must participate in the case competition.
- At least four and up to six team members participate in the ski competition, including at least two men and two women.
Case Competition Highlights
- Focuses on managerial ethics in a corporate environment.
- Delivered to teams three weeks prior to competition date.
- Presentation length will not exceed 20 minutes (time limit will be strictly enforced).
- Presentation is followed by 10 minutes of Q&A (time limit will be strictly enforced).
Ski Competition Highlights
- Held on official NASTAR course.
- Team ski score is combined time total of two fastest women and two fastest men.
- Each participant may ski a maximum of three runs.
- Any team not comprised of at least two females and two males must accept a time of 50 seconds for each missing member.
