Race & Case Competition format and details

Format

The case competition will take place throughout the day focusing on managerial ethics in a corporate environment delivered to each team prior to the date of the competition. Presentations are to last no longer than 20 minutes and will be followed by a 10 minute Q&A session. Time limits will be strictly enforced.

Presentations will occur at the Daniels College of Business. A random drawing will determine when each team will present.

Scoring System

The score is weighted 80% on the case competition and 20% on the skiing.

Case Competition:

  • A panel of judges will score each presentation. Each judge may award a maximum of 10 points each for 10 different criteria for a maximum of 100 points.
  • Each team's raw score will be carried over as their score for the case portion of the competition and multiplied by 0.8 to get the weighted score.

Ski Race:

  • The race will be held on an official NASTAR course.
  • Each participant may ski a maximum of three runs.
  • Any team not comprised of at least two women and two men must accept a time of 50 seconds for each missing member.
  • The two fastest women and two fastest men on each team will be individually ranked and given an individual score based on position.
  • The team score will be the combined score of the top two men and the top two women. The maximum team score is 100 points.
  • The team score will be multiplied by 0.2 to get the weighted score.

Both weighted scores will be added together to get the final team score.

Presentation Guidelines

Teams should consider the following broad guidelines when presenting their case:

1. Consider distinctive viewpoints, such as the community, management, employees, financials, shareholders, etc..
2. Convey a comprehensive understanding of the case including key issues, possible impacts, and future government regulations.

3. Provide strategic decision analysis including a financial analysis, if applicable.

4. Present a clear resolution and demonstrate proactive management processes.

5. Demonstrate creativity.

Technology

Teams may bring and use their own laptops and technologies. However, they must be compatible with the Daniels network. If the team's laptop or technologies do no work with the Daniels network, compatible devices will be provided. Teams are strongly encouraged to save and bring a copy of their presentation on a jump drive. Technological support will be available throughout the case competition.

Important Considerations

In advance of and after presentations, each team will have a private room for preparation and to secure belongings. Teams will be permitted to make minor changes to their presentations between rounds. However, the presentation must remain largely unchanged.
