Andrea Herrmann is a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the ‘Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy’ at Columbia University and Assistant Professor at the ‘Innovation Studies Group’ of Utrecht University. She has published articles on institutional theory, corporate competitiveness, strategy, innovation management, and methodology, and a book - One Political Economy, One Competitive Strategy? – with Oxford University Press, in 2008. Daniels IMBA Student, Hart Schwartz, enjoys writing about himself in the 3rd person, as President Richard Nixon used to do: “They won’t have Schwartz to kick around anymore!” After a DU trip to China in June, Hart listened to a voice inside himself that said: “Go West young man,” and set off alone on smoky, overcrowded Chinese trains along the classic Silk Route, where he saw the old meet the new: terra cotta warriors and smoke stacks, wind turbine farms and camels. Having reached Urumqi, the world’s most landlocked city and capital of Xinjiang province, Hart was inspired by the bizarre Legoland skyline to enter even more bizarre terrain: The great glorious everlasting nationstate of Kazakhstan! Alternately dodging glitzy Kazakh fashionistas (vile temptresses!) and malevolent Russian-Kazakh gangsters, Hart somehow survived the seemingly limitless expanse of the Kazakh steppes. He was sustained by the motivation to find his beloved, and strived courageously after his dream of marrying the sister of one Mr. Borat Sagdeev. Did he succeed? Did he fail? Who did he meet, and what did he see? Beyond B-School, Applying Excel hosted by ScholarSquad Ltd. The first half of the seminar, 45 minutes, will cover Excel applications used in Financial and Market Analysis and Operations Management, which include, Prebuilt Functions, What-if Analysis, Goal Seek, Pivot Tables and Solver. The second half of the seminar, 45 minutes, will focus on efficiency and effectiveness in the work place through an introduction to User Defined Functions, Macros, VBA and building Add-ins. We will work in groups and allow for questions for the last 30 minutes. If you wonder about the skill sets employers are seeking, want a competitive advantage, or want to strengthen your abilities.

To raise money for Dress for Success Denver, there will be a $5 cover charge.

Team Convenio, a project team made up of graduate students from the Daniels College of Business and the Conflict Resolution Institute at the University of Denver, is pleased to announce "The Come Together Project," a panel discussion on the topic of civil discourse in America.
In these times of economic hardship and partisan political speech, everyone has an opinion on what the "other side of the aisle" is doing wrong.  Political gridlock has become the norm in Washington, and it seems that political rhetoric serves only to further polarize the relationship between the right and the left.  What has become of respectful, enlightened discourse?  What progress is served by angry crowds of "us" and "them" shouting at each other at political rallies? Is the idea that disparate political beliefs can converge to support governance in the best interests of all the people too antiquated to be revived?

Alumni and friends are invited to take over Vail at our annual ski weekend, held in conjunction with the qualifying round of the Daniels Race & Case Competition.  Each year the Daniels College of Business Graduate Business Student Association plays host to business students from around the country in a business ethics case competition and Alpine ski challenge rolled into one. As one of the country's premier business ethics case competitions, Race & Case allows students to apply critical thinking and ethical decision making to unique, real-world situations. Not to mention, a chance to conquer fresh, Rocky Mountain powder on Vail's NASTAR course. The qualifying round is Daniels vs. Daniels and will determine the Daniels team that competes in the national competition in February.  Over 14 teams are competing this year.  It is a great opportunity to cheer on our best and brightest!

Argus DCF Valuation software is the "gold standard" in financial analysis for real estate. Argus is commonly used by appraisers, brokers and institutions. Once the realm of institutional investors, Argus has recently permeated the ranks of all real estate to the point that now it is somewhat common to see broker packages include an Argus analysis. Knowing a little about how Argus works will aid in the appropriate interpretation of Argus results. Argus is a powerful software package to be sure. The problem is that for many in the field Argus remains a black box. This 4 hour class will expose students to the basic structure of Argus and will help students understand the basic algorithms used to create the lease-by-lease analysis. Students will receive step-by-step instruction in the basic inputs, outputs, and calculations used by Argus. In class the students will construct and manipulate an Argus pro-forma and interpret the Argus file using basic real estate finance principles. Students will gain a deeper understanding of just how Argus works and will apply these concepts in a structured, hands-on learning environment. Class Requirements: A laptop with a CD drive and Excel 2000 or later is required.

In these three years, we saw the collapse of the housing market, record high prices for oil, a recession, a sub-prime loan crisis in the mortgage industry, a significant increase in the number of bank failures, and bankruptcies for General Motors and Chrysler Daimler. Many of our stalwart financial institutions were dramatically changed -- Lehman Brothers failed; Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns were near failure when they were acquired by Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase, respectively; Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley became bank holding companies; and the Federal Government became the owner of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and AIG. These events led to a controversial bail-out of the United States financial system. Many of our citizens have lost confidence in, and respect for, our financial system. President Obama and Congress are both promoting new regulations for our financial institutions and markets. What can we expect for the future? Specific included topics and issues include checkerboard arrangements-divided interests, undivided interests, Farmouts combined with other agreements, Farmouts involving federal units, limitations as to depth or formation, assignments, drilling requirements, simple Farmouts subject to "back- in" provisions, and whether Farmouts create a "carried interest." Costs recoverable by the Farmee are discussed such as blowout expenses, interest on expenditures for mineral exploration and litigation expenses. We consider Farmor?s retained interests and the extent of interests conveyed and discuss Farmouts as creating various interests or relationships. Also included are Farmouts and gas balancing agreements, overriding royalty payments, triggering a working interest option, preferential purchase rights, and effect of hold harmless clauses, performance, breach and damages when things go wrong.

We will look at special issues such as what to do about gas balancing problems, the use of area of mutual interests "AMIs," problems such as costs of completing and reworking wells, dealing with non or underperforming operators and how to remove them, earning conditions, interests assigned and reserved, tax considerations, committing leases to Farmout Agreements, dealing with minimum depth in Farmout Agreements, cost overruns in jointly drilled wells, critical issues for Joint Operating Agreements including understanding the AAPL model form, interests of the various parties, proper conduct of operations and what to do about defaulting parties. Mineral owners, surface owners, accountants, bankers, financial advisors and attorneys who advise mineral and surface owners regarding their rights before and after a lease is signed with an oil company and those who seek to better understand potential conflicts between lessees of the surface including wind energy companies. This information packed one day class includes many critically important topics. Students will learn basic mineral rights, the fundamentals of oil and gas exploration and production, drilling and completion, and producing characteristics of oil and gas wells. Students will gain insight into oil and gas measurement, oil and gas royalty statement deductions, how to read oil and gas royalty statements, oil and gas royalty management, the role of division orders and recent key issues in managing your oil and gas royalties. Those who attend will better understand how to verify oil and gas production volumes, measurement of oil and gas, royalty tax, severance tax and depletion allowance. For those mineral owners who are not leased we cover negotiating an oil and gas lease and understanding is being signed. A most interesting portion of this class has to do with wind leasing and how wind leases may be affected by oil and gas leases. Finally, students will engage in a discussion of surface damages and what to expect and what is fair when surface damages occur and learn how to best respond to related issues.

In this course, students will learn the whys and hows of due diligence examination, a term that comes from provisions in the typical purchase and sale agreement that deal with the buyer's examination of the property and the seller's records. Students learn that such clauses typically provide that the buyer will have both the access and right to examine the property and pertinent files, books and records of the seller and that the buyer is charged with knowledge of all defects or deficiencies he could have discovered through the exercise of due diligence in his examination of the property, the official title records and the files, books and records of the seller. Any objections to title or the physical condition of the properties not presented to the seller by a given date will be deemed to have been waived and the buyer will literally have to accept the property in an "as is, where is" condition. "Due diligence"? really means the buyer's examination of these records. The land professional has traditionally performed tasks that could be broadly described as the acquisition, development and management of individual properties. Students will learn the role of land professionals and how they are typically involved in matters such as title work, lease purchasing, negotiation and preparation of contracts such as operating agreements, farmout agreements, surface damage agreements, lease administration and other things that are involved in the drilling and management of wells. Students will learn how inside examination covers examination of the seller's files, books and records and outside examination covers the physical examination of the property, the environmental examination and the examination of official title records. In this course, both the inside and outside examinations are reviewed and tips are presented for coordinating the entire due diligence search in a cost effective and timely manner.

This information packed one day class includes many critically important topics. Students will learn basic mineral rights, the fundamentals of oil and gas exploration and production, drilling and completion, and producing characteristics of oil and gas wells. Students will gain insight into oil and gas measurement, oil and gas royalty statement deductions, how to read oil and gas royalty statements, oil and gas royalty management, the role of division orders and recent key issues in managing your oil and gas royalties. Those who attend will better understand how to verify oil and gas production volumes, measurement of oil and gas, royalty tax, severance tax and depletion allowance. For those mineral owners who are not leased we cover negotiating an oil and gas lease and understanding is being signed. A most interesting portion of this class has to do with wind leasing and how wind leases may be affected by oil and gas leases. Finally, students will engage in a discussion of surface damages and what to expect and what is fair when surface damages occur and learn how to best respond to related issues.

 This course provides a detailed introduction and review of petroleum land titles, leases and contracts for the new and experienced landman, and land support staff. It offers an overview of the significance of the "land" issues for members of the exploration team and company management. Fitzgerald uses a practical application approach and will take you through useful and extensive exercises emphasizing titles and leases, Farmouts and Joint Operating Agreements. Students will learn how to interpret deeds, reservations, and mineral and royalty grants, how to interpret deeds, rights and obligations of the oil and gas lease, the effect of royalty, delay rental, shut-in royalty, Pugh, "Mother Hubbard", commence drilling-continuous operation, and other lease clauses with a focus on lease termination and "savings" clauses and the negotiation, use, and interpretation of Farmout and Joint Operating Agreements. Students will learn about Farmout earning conditions, pitfalls in defining Minimum Depth and Earned Depth provisions in Farmout Agreements and evaluate scenarios for various. interests reserved and assigned. Students will learn the most critical and challenging clauses in the AAPL Model Form Joint Operating Agreement and will consider all four versions related to such topics as how to deal with cost overruns to jointly drilled wells, how to address problems in completing and reworking wells, how to deal with non-operators who are not paying their bills (going "non-consent") and the impact of penalties, and what can be done about the bad operator under each version of the Model Form.

Students will learn crucial information land professionals use when dealing with critical title issues and conveyances that impact how oil and gas interests are calculated and maintained. Students will review numerous title problems including acreage discrepancies, "after acquired title;" "after discovered" or omitted property, the Duhig Rule, execution defects, mechanics' and materialmens' liens, the rule related to interest conveyed vs., land described; descent & distribution; homestead, life tenancy issues and term mineral conveyances. Students will learn not only about understanding and identifying the problem, but how to "cure" such problems. We cover the purpose of a title opinion, whether it is for lease acquisition, drilling, division order, security, or production purchase purposes, the information reported in the opinion, and what title defects lead to title requirements. To get it right, one needs to know exactly what a title opinion is and how and why we have a need to "cure." In this course, students will review and discuss key ideas concerning the drilling title opinion, the supplemental title opinion, the division order title opinion, types of curative instruments including lease amendments, designation or change in depository, amendment of description, extension of primary term, amendment of lease, affidavits including various types such as affidavit of identity, affidavit of heirship and marriage history, affidavit of use and possession, affidavit of adverse possession, affidavit of non-production, affidavit of production, and corroborating affidavit. We will review other curative instruments such as ratification and/or consent to pool, release of oil and gas lease, release of deed of trust or lien, subordination of lien, tax certificates, statement of tenant, quitclaim deed, stipulation of interest, certified or exemplified copies, e.g. power of attorney or divorce decree, and the role of other documents in the curative process.

Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Raza Studies and Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies, and Co-Director of the Educational Equity Initiative at San Francisco State University's Cesar Chavez Institute. In addition, he is an urban secondary school teacher where he researches the use of critical pedagogy in urban schools.

Duncan-Andrade will explore the concept of hope as essential for developing effective urban classroom practice, including the three necessary elements of educational practice that produce and sustain true hope.

Each year the Daniels College of Business Graduate Business Student Association plays host to business students from around the country in a business ethics case competition and Alpine ski challenge rolled into one. As one of the country's premier business ethics case competitions, Race & Case allows students to apply critical thinking and ethical decision making to unique, real-world situations. Not to mention, a chance to conquer fresh, Rocky Mountain powder. The 2010 National Competition begins with a Welcome Reception with the Denver Business Series on Thursday, February 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Downtown Denver. The case portion of the competition is Friday, February 26 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Daniels College of Business. After the case presentations, the teams head up to Vail for the race portion of the competition on Saturday, February 27 on the Black Forest NASTAR Course. The competition concludes with an awards celebration dinner from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort and Spa.

The University of Denver's African American Alumni Association and Black Student Alliance presents:

A Night with the Tuskegee Airmen on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 5:30-7:30 pm in Craig Hall. This event will give students, alumni and community members an opportunity to meet and hear the stories of legendary World War II heroes.

To provide a little historical context, 450 black fighter pilots fought the war in the air over North Africa, Sicily and Europe. Called the "Black Birdmen" by the Germans and "The Black Redtail Angels" by American pilots, the Tuskegee Airmen were respected by all. By the end of the war, the Tuskegee Airmen were awarded 150 military decorations. During the event, original airmen will share their stories and answer questions about their experiences.

The fallout from the financial and economic crisis has bolstered a push for more shareowner power in the boardroom and greater accountability for directors. What do you need to know? What can boards do to ensure high performance? Will legislation and regulation restore public trust, or will it take more? Peter Gleason, Managing Director and CFO for the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), will discuss how the current economic crisis has eroded public and investor confidence in corporate governance and what action American corporations must take to restore the public?s trust; and share the current legislative actions taking place on the Hill and the potential impact on boards going forward. Mr. Gleason is a frequent presenter on the subjects of corporate governance, executive and director compensation, hostile corporate transactions, board evaluation, and strategic planning. This hands-on session is designed especially for real estate professionals who want to learn the basics of financial functions using Excel. Students will learn to use financial functions and advanced tools in Excel and apply them immediately to their own investment and development models. This lecture provides a summary of several centuries of Jewish history in Suriname, and how the long established Jewish community of that country encouraged the efforts of playwrights and politicos to find an alternate "promised land" in the rain forests of South America in the mid-twentieth century.
Adam Rovner is an assistant professor of English and Jewish Literature at the University of Denver. He serves as the translations editor for ?Zeek: A Jewish Journal of Thought and Culture.? His articles and essays on literature, popular culture, and travel have appeared in a number of academic and general interest publications. Rovner is currently at work on a book about various proposals to find territorial solutions to Jewish homelessness.

This hands-on session is designed especially for real estate professionals who want to learn the basics of financial functions using Excel. The original Frontier Airlines was Denver's hometown airline for 40 years until it was purchased by Continental Airlines in 1986. In 1994, Frontier was recreated by some executives from the original Frontier and some industry newcomers. While Frontier is now the second largest airline at DIA, its 15-year history has been full of challenges and successes. In their second year of operation, Frontier made a dramatic change to its business model and became a low-cost carrier to compete directly against United Airlines.

The Wine Pairing Dinner features selections from David Arthur Vineyards. The five-course meal has been designed by the HRTM Culinary Team to complement the chosen wines. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception accompanied by a talented string-quartet from the Lamont School of Music at DU. The dinner will be served by the hospitality students, supporting the scholarship cause of the dinner.

What is your impact? Daniels, Voices of Experience, The Institute for Enterprise Ethics, and Net Impact are partnering to host a week of events that address this question. The week begins with the Colorado Ski Area Sustainability Panel on Thursday November 5th at 5 p.m. in the Marcus Commons at Daniels. On Monday, November 9th at 6 p.m. in the Davis Auditorium, the CEO of Seventh Generation Jeffrey Hollender will discuss "creating a game plan for a business to transition to a sustainable economy." To close the week, the Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey, will speak at the Cable Center on November 11 at 6 p.m. Net Impact will host a networking event for members with all the ski area panelists as well as exclusive opportunities to meet Mr. Hollender and Mr. Mackey. The week of events offers a unique opportunity to hear and meet individuals who have maximized their impact. To give back to our greater community, Net Impact is sponsoring a canned food drive in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving to benefit the Bienvienidos food bank. Keep an eye out for the donations bins and make a small impact of your own!

Companies come to campus and give short presentations about their company to our graduate business students. Firms can present about their industry, market sector, and prospect for potential employment. Companies give the same 15 minute presentation four times so that students can attend four of five presentations. There will be 10 minutes of Q&A following each presentation and a 5 minute break.

The "Institute" is home to the Executive MBA and Professional MBA programs at Daniels and a gathering place for students on class days. A training seminar that provides the opportunity to further your Microsoft Excel skills. Through practical examples and annotated Excel guides, the lectures will discuss theories, approaches and applications of financial modeling.
