The prospect of searching for internships can be a daunting task for many students. Between submitting the required application materials, the interview process, and narrowing down which internships to apply to themselves, there is a lot to think about. So, you might ask, Where do I even begin? Here are 3 easy steps to help you get started with your internship search:
- Fine-tune your resume and cover letter. Before you apply for a position, be sure that you’ve had your resume and cover letters reviewed. The formatting and professionalism of these documents can really set you apart as a candidate. Daniels Career Services provides a variety of resources to help ensure that your resume and cover letter are looking their best; you can upload a document for approval on the Pioneer Careers database or schedule an appointment with a career center coach to receive helpful feedback.
- Visit the Pioneer Careers database. Pioneer Careers adds new job and internship listings daily. You can keep track of your favorite listings, the positions you’ve applied to, document approvals, and application deadlines all in one place. Additionally, you can access recruiter and employer contact information through the database.
- Attend a career fair. There are several career and internship fairs held at or near DU throughout the school year. Check out the complete list of attending employers for the next career fair happening on Wednesday, October 19 at the Ritchie Center from 3:00-6:00 pm. Career fairs are a great opportunity to network and find out more about the job fields and companies that interest you. Researching some of the employers in attendance and then narrowing down your list to the top five you would like to speak with most will save both time and stress, as well as prevent that fear of missing out that might come with seeing the impressive list of employers.
Internships provide an opportunity to network, gain professional experience, and get a sense of what any career has to offer; it’s no wonder that employers now increasingly prefer to hire college graduates with an internship or two under their belt. Knowing where to start can be difficult, but once you’ve established the starting point in your internship search, it will be much easier to focus on where you’d like to go from there.
