MS Finance Accepted into CFA Institute’s University Recognition Program

July 30, 2014

The CFA Institute has accepted the Master of Science in Finance Program into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program.

Each year, the CFA Institute conducts a survey on the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the field of finance, and the results are used to develop the topics covered in the CFA program curriculum. To be accepted into the University Recognition Program, Dr. Chris Hughen, Reiman School of Finance, led the effort to document proof that the Daniels MS Finance curriculum covers more than 70 percent of such topics. As a recognized university, the Daniels College of Business Reiman School of Finance can now award CFA Program scholarships to students.

As part of its participation in the University of Recognition Program, Reiman is developing a new course on ethics in finance. This course will cover the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice developed by the CFA Institute, which is the leading professional organization in the finance field. A core part of the Daniels mission is to develop ethical business leaders, and this new course helps the College and the Reiman School achieve this goal by relating ethical principles to common scenarios in finance. The course will cover the fundamentals of ethics as presented in Daniels MBA courses (as well as material required by the CFA program), and will also target both investment and corporate areas.

“There is strong demand for CFA training and therefore, this recognition is so important for our MS Finance program,” says Dr. Thomajean Johnsen, director of the Reiman School of Finance. “As we move forward to attain increasing international recognition, this will be a critical distinction for Daniels and Reiman.”

A team of DU students recently participated in the CFA Institute Research Challenge, winning the Colorado competition. They advanced to the Americas final and the semi-finals. More than 3,500 students from 800 universities around the world participated in the 2013-2014 CFA Institute Research Challenge. The Daniels team has won the Colorado CFA Institute Investment Research Challenge three of the last five years.
