Frequently Asked Questions
Who can sign up to take SBI? Juniors, seniors or recent alumni (from DU or any other school) that are non-business
majors. Graduate students in non-business programs at DU or any other school.
Others are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Can Business minors take SBI? Business minors are welcome to take the Summer Business Institute. However, please
remember that because the program is not offered for credit, the class cannot be applied
to the business minor. Additionally, there will be overlap of material from the courses
you take in the business minor.
Will there be homework? The program will require reading, reflective papers and short presentations. Although
the course will not be for credit, it will be rigorous. As in any experience, what
you put in will be what you get out of it.
Will this count for credit? The program will not count for credit. The participants who successfully complete
the course will receive a Summer Business Institute Certificate. Additionally, the
course will be a significant addition to a resume.
What is the grading system? Because the program is non-credit, participants will not receive grades. However,
the networking opportunities with the faculty, guest speakers and other industry contacts
throughout the program are great and stand-out participants will certainly be able
to request recommendations based on their performance in the class.
Are there prerequisites to the program? No.
Do I need to have a specific GPA to qualify? There is not a GPA requirement. However, please realize that the program will be rigorous
and will require the students to be dedicated to making the experience beneficial
for themselves and their working groups.
Are scholarships/student loans/financial aid available? Because the program is non-credit, it is not eligible for financial aid.
What is the retreat? The retreat will be held at The Nature Place, a conference and education center in Florissant, Colorado. It is a spectacular place
to become familiar with the group, put some of your new leadership skills into action
and learn a lot about yourself. We consistently hear (in our other leadership programs)
that the retreat is the most impactful experience of the program.
What is the registration deadline? The early registration deadline ($400 discount) is March 30, 2012. The final deadline
for registration is May 15. Registrations after May 15 will be considered on a case-by-case
basis and may be assessed a late fee.
What do I need to do in order to sign up? Register for the program online; no other application is required.
