Biography at a Glance

Elizabeth Barrie is a Director of Integrated Projects focused on bringing together collaborative teams and processes to build success. In addition she strives to become a dynamic thought leader within the Industry to merge education with real world design and construction discussions and examples. She has spent the last 3 years being the catalyst for change in her current role outlining process change and creating ways to advance integrated project management through collaboration and innovation.

Prior to Barrie’s current role with Balfour Beatty, Barrie spent 18 years with DPR Construction leading teams of 2 to 20 in field operations. She has participated in, and facilitated design charrette’s, planning meetings and conducted numerous contract negotiations with project Owners, Architects and Subcontracts on projects ranging from $1M to $200M. Using target milestones, she has delivered projects on time and under budget. Barrie understands the critical activities during pre-construction for the designers and also what is required to start construction. Communication and collaboration are critical; and maintaining a realistic and effective schedule is the key to achieving on-time results and understanding project costs.

Barrie holds a Finance MBA, a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She attended the Leadership School at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and is a Licensed Architect in California and Arizona. She holds the DBIA credential and is a Board Committee member with Design-Build Institute of America. In addition she holds the LEED AP BD+C credential and is a Member of the USGBC.

As an experienced Adjunct Faculty, Barrie has worked with UCSD’s School of Business teaching Project Planning and Scheduling and at the University of Southern Mississippi teaching Mechanical Systems in the School of Construction. She has also guest lectured at Cal Poly, Boise State and Fresno State in their Construction Programs on Design Management, Scheduling and Business Ethics as related to the Construction Industry.

Barrie resides in San Diego with her partner of many years and two amazing children. She actively participates in Community activities as a Board Member for the local district Little League and is an active Board Member for the San Diego Chapter of ACE Mentoring.

As a way to help balance personal and professional, Barrie is a cyclist and active triathlete competing in over 25 races including (2) half ironman distance events. Barrie volunteers with the San Diego based Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to raise funds for special equipment and supports their mission to provide opportunities and support for people with physical challenges to pursue active lifestyles.

Barrie is an advocate for education at all levels and has also been actively involved as a volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement with the belief that,

“Sometimes all it takes to realize your potential is a little push from someone telling you that you can and you will!”
