"Learning occurs where the extremes are," says Scott McLagan, Clinical Professor and Executive Director, Executive and Corporate Relations. In partnership with Newmont Mining, Daniels students explored the economic, social and environmental challenges of operating gold mines in Africa while engaging with key stakeholders. "Newmont provides such rich ground for students to learn: the environmental challenges of open pit gold mining; the economic challenges of such a capital-intensive operation in an infrastructure challenged country; the social concerns of labor and the community; and the leadership realities of coordinating it with a worldwide workforce."

Students visited one of the world's largest gold mines operated by Newmont Mining in northern Peru. Working on site at the mine, they collaborated with Newmont's Environmental and Social Responsibility team on developing sustainable strategies.
In southern Peru, students hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu to explore the dilemma posed by this UNESCO site: Is it feasible to both promote and protect this popular destination through ecotourism?

Daniels students in the course "Microfinance and Sustainable Development" traveled to Cambodia to experience microfinance firsthand. Students met with staff and clients of the microfinance institution Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Co., or AMK, to help Deutsche Bank's Global Social Investment Funds evaluate AMK as a potential recipient of investment funds.

As part of the same trip, students visited Peace House in Tanzania. Peace House educates AIDS orphans, engaging them in technology research and business development initiatives that create a brighter future for themselves, their communities, and the country.
