Language Requirements for International Applicants

Discover Daniels link to Degrees and MajorsAll Daniels students are expected to read, write and speak English fluently. International students must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Language requirements for undergraduate students are available from DU's Undergraduate International Admissions.

Specific language requirements for graduate students:

  • TOEFL: A minimum score of 570 (paper based), 230 (computer based), or 88 (Internet based) is required for admission consideration. When requesting official TOEFL scores, please refer to institutional code 4842 and department code 02.
  • IELTS: A score of 6.5 or higher is required to be considered for admission.
  • Possible exemptions: International applicants with a regionally accredited bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution and/or whose native language is English may be exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.
  • English Conditional Acceptance (ECA): Applicants who do not meet the required level of English proficiency may be considered for conditional acceptance if all other admissions criteria are met. Prior to enrolling in any graduate-level coursework, ECA requires an evaluation by the University of Denver's English Language Center (ELC) and successful completion of intensive ELC English courses including the Graduate Preparation Program.
  • Graduate Preparation Program: International applicants whose native language is not English are encouraged to enroll in the University of Denver's reputable Graduate Preparation Program (GPP) one quarter prior to the start of graduate study. Students who complete GPP will not be required to participate in language skill evaluations during International Student Pre-Orientation.
  • Pre-Orientation Evaluation: All international students are required to attend the International Student Pre-Orientation. During pre-orientation, any international student who has not completed GPP and whose native language is not English will go through a comprehensive evaluation of English language skills in both writing and speaking. As a result of this evaluation, students may need to enroll in one or both of the GPP courses (Writing Workshop and Speaking Workshop), each of which consists of 10 hours of instruction per week.
